The software is free. Pay us only to run it.
Madrona is Apache-2.0 — self-host it for nothing, forever. If you would rather we ran it, hosting is one price set by your operating budget. Every application included, no per-user and no per-record fees.
Self-hosted
$0 / forever
The complete platform under Apache-2.0, run on your own infrastructure. Every feature, unlimited users, unlimited records, no time limit.
- The same code we run for hosted customers
- docker compose up — no cloud account required
- Community support via GitHub issues
- Paid support and migration available separately
Hosted, by operating budget
Same software as the free self-hosted install — what you are buying is the infrastructure, the updates, the backups, and someone to call. Institutions under a $500k operating budget are hosted free.

One price covers Collections, Media, Content, and Guide. There is no smaller edition, no per-app pricing, and no upgrade to sell you later. What changes between tiers is how much of our time comes with it.
Free hosting under a $500k operating budget
Small institutions have the worst software and the least room to escape it, and they cost us very little to host. Free hosting at that size is self-serve — the documentation and the community issue tracker, without a response commitment — and is offered as capacity allows. Paid support and migration are available separately if you want them.
Operating budget above $50M or managing multiple sites?
Institutions at this scale typically need custom data migration, specialized integrations, or phased rollouts. We scope these projects individually to get it right.

Services, hosted or self-hosted
These are scoped as fixed-price statements of work and are available whether we host you or not. Self-hosting institutions are welcome to buy migration and training without ever buying hosting.
Data migration
Extraction, transformation, and validated load from TMS, PastPerfect, Axiell, spreadsheets, or whatever you are on now.
Staff training
Role-based sessions for registrars, curators, and administrators, with documentation and recordings you keep.
Custom integration
Connectors for the systems in your building, built in the open repository so you can maintain them yourself later.
Self-hosting support
A support agreement for institutions running their own installation, including upgrade guidance and incident response.
Typical implementation timelines
Guided onboarding is included with every hosting plan. Complex data migrations and legacy system integrations are scoped separately with a fixed-price statement of work.

Frequently asked questions
Common questions about Madrona, open source, hosting, and getting started.
The software is. Madrona is released under Apache-2.0 — every application, the API, and the deployment tooling. You can install it, run it, modify it, and deploy it for as many institutions as you like, forever, without paying us anything. What we sell is hosting, support, and services for institutions that would rather not run it themselves.
Let’s scope your project
Tell us about your current systems and goals. We’ll build a proposal that fits — or point you at the install guide if you would rather run it yourself.
